What others are saying
When I started using Vectorworks some 16 years ago I was fortunate to come across the Field Template SoftSymbol range not long after. They are the absolute benchmark for high quality, detailed and most of all clearly drawn symbols. They are the first ones I reach for when starting a new design and as a side by side comparison with the stock supplied VW symbols…well there is no comparison.

Some [lighting designers] have always drawn their own symbols. If that’s the path you choose, that’s fine. For everyone else, there’s Steve Shelley and his SoftSymbols™. The range of products covered is remarkable. The price, given the amount of work that must be involved, remarkably low. Which is perhaps why they’re so widely used, particularly by lighting designers and their associates in America - a country that really does care about beautiful light plots. If you do too, check them out: this is a working classic, still in use daily...

What makes SoftSymbols so useful is that they are thoroughly researched, well made and above all, stick to some rigorous drafting standards that are maintained across the whole catalog.

Soft Symbols are my Vectorworks symbol library of choice, and have been since my tenure as Hubbard Street’s Lighting Director. Steve has created a product that is incredibly thorough, thoughtful, and well-organized. It looks great at any scale, is appropriate for every type of lighting gig, and could only have come from someone with his level of experience and attention to detail. It is an invaluable resource to me and will continue to be my go to library for the foreseeable future.

SoftSymbols are the symbol library of choice for the Lincoln Center Festival, and for all my other professional activities. They are cleanly built, graphically sophisticated, and the libraries are by far the most complete. There’s no other choice as far as I’m concerned.

I did the Lab Rep Plot revisions with SoftSymbols. LOVE IT! So does the crew and the union House Elec. We also think the twenty-or-so production teams coming into the Lab this spring (who’ll receive print copies of this drawing) will love it too. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have SoftSymbols™ - I trust my layouts again, since your symbols are the same size as the objects they represent (DUH!), and my drawings look more like my drawings again. Woo hoo!

Robe Lighting 4.1 Pack

The Robe Lighting 4.1 Pack is a refresh of the entire Robe catalog – this library was last updated in the winter of 2022, and wow! Robe doesn't let the grass grow under its feet! The 4.1 update adds 60 new symbols to the library, and the library structure maintains the online offering structure - the collection is sorted into two fundamental groups: "Active" [mainly representing LED fixtures,] and "x-Discontinued" [representing just about everything else.]

New LED Movers: Introducing the new Painte product line in three variations: The Painte Profile, the Painte Spot, and the ip65-rated iPainte. Two new ip65-rated Esprite movers join that product line, while the Forte Fresnel, Forte PC, and four ip65-rated iForte fixtures join the Forte product line. Meanwhile, the compact Cuete and Spote moving lights join the catalog as well.

New Wash and Beam Fixtures: The new LEDBeam 150 and ip65-rated iBeam 350 join the extensive LEDWash/Beam family; and the highly-anticipated ip65-rated Robin iSpiider!

New Static Fixtures: The LED T12 and TX1 PosiProfile fixtures; the LED-Tungsten HolyPATT and MolyPATT fixtures; the ip65-rated iParFect 150 FWQ LED fixture [with ACL Beam,] in RGB-White and RGB-Amber chip configurations.

The Latest Linear Fixtures: The Robin TetraX and ip65-rated iTetra 2 join the T32 Cyc to expand legit LED wall washing fixture options; on the other hand, the new Footsie 1 and Footsie 2 fixtures [flat-profile LED drop washes disguised as footlights] – in three different chip configurations – RGBW, Tunable White, or Warm White.

Proven Performers: All these resources join a proven team of existing lighting resources:

The Seasoned Movers: First up, the Pointe, T1 and T2 LED product lines [each with their own array of lens configurations]; the ProMotion RGB mover; the BMFL Spot, Blade, Wash, WashFX and WashBeam discharge movers; the LEDWash and LEDBeam fixture families, including the popular Robin Spiider and Tarrantula; the LightMaster series, converting BMFL, Esprite, Forte, T1 or T2 fixtures into manually-controlled followspots; The RoboSpot, transforming movers into remote followspots.

The Stalwart Static Fixtures: The onePATT, PATT 2013, PATT 2017, and pixelPATT and picklePATT fixtures; the ParFect 100 and ParFect 150 LED product lines; the entire ParFact S1 and SB1series of fixtures, sporting an array of color temperatures; and the T11 series, including the T11 Profile, T11 Fresnel, and T11 PC fixtures.

The Linear Legacy Fixtures: The Robin Tetra 1 and Tetra 2, along with the Robin iBar 15, providing LED-powered wall washing fixtures.

Tighten that Waistband: The new SoftTrim™ macros convert all applicable 3D components to Generic Solids, in order to reduce the overall size of every SoftSymbol resource in an effort to keep light plots compact.

The Robe Lighting 4.1 Object Library also includes:

SoftMap™: A pdf map matching each object library. The pdf can be printed out to provide a hard-copy reference for all the symbols, regardless of printer.

SoftData™: The latest information, extracted directly from the symbols, and triple-checked using the SoftGauntlet® System. The data is translated into metric units as well—all symbols and resources can convert to metric scale, utilizing Sam Jones' free Autoplot for Spotlight macros.

3D components that hang, or sit on the floor: Symbol resources provide default 3D components that appear as fixtures hanging from a batten, or, with a FLR suffix - fixtures sitting on the stage.
